What do you think of when you hear the word cowboy?

Is it shootouts at the O.K. Corral or Old West gun slingers like Billy the Kid? Is it John Wayne, a man synonymous with the Western? Woody from Toy Story? Or maybe it’s Cardi B, whose instantly iconic red paisley cowboy hat and chaps from Blueface’s Thotiana remix video took the internet by storm.

With the revelry of their ten-year anniversary behind them, the Houston Cinema Arts Society has been busy crafting the program for this year. On the agenda is the question: Who can be the cowboy? The festival will highlight a so-called “yee-haw agenda” with a look at southern aesthetics, and celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing, which marked its 50th anniversary in July, with a special focus on science fiction, space and the future.

The full lineup for the five-day festival has yet to be announced, but what is known for certain is that the film fest will feature more than 25 events — film screenings, art installations, live performances and workshops — at locations all over the city including Rice Cinema, Asia Society Texas Center and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It’s also a safe bet to expect some top-shelf talent to attend as previous years have seen Alex Gibney, Richard Linklater, Tilda Swinton and Kid ‘N Play, among others, drop by.
