Elf – The Musical | TUTS
During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Will Ferrell admitted that he was afraid that one day people would stop and ask him, “Why did you do that one about the elf?”
Instead, his 2003 Christmas comedy “Elf” became a perennial holiday classic, joining the ranks of standard holiday fare like “The Nutcracker,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” as can’t miss (and can’t avoid) viewing between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.
Like David Berenbaum’s film, Elf: The Musical is about Buddy, an elf who is actually a human. He wound up in Santa’s red bag of gifts as a baby and was taken back to the North Pole. There he lives, quite happily, until his abnormally large size (compared to the elves) and his lack of toy-making skills give away his human ancestry. With Santa’s go-ahead, Buddy leaves the workshop for the Big Apple on a quest to find his father, who just so happens to be on Santa’s naughty list.
With a book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin, music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin, Elf: The Musical has proved incredibly popular since its Broadway premiere in 2010. And now, just in time for the holidays, Theatre Under The Stars offers Houston audiences an all-new production of the magical Broadway hit.
But remember, Theatre Under The Stars is only providing the holiday cheer. You’re responsible for your own candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup!
Theatre Under The Stars’ production of Elf: The Musical runs through Dec. 22. The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
